In two weeks since our last Making More Magic construction project update, we’ve continued to make major progress across the mountain. This work is part of Anakeesta’s $100 million expansion, with Phase 1 focused on the new Crystal Express gondola, a reimagined Firefly Village, and enhancements to the Treetop Skywalk.
As we move through the first half of February, you can really feel the project shifting gears. We’re wrapping up major foundation work, lining up critical lift components, and preparing for the kind of visible progress that comes when work starts going vertical.
What Progress Did Anakeesta Make in the First Two Weeks of February?
If you’d like to know more about the progress we’ve made on our Making More Magic expansion, check out the top five milestones we reached from Feb. 2 through Feb. 16:
1. Completed the Third and Final Lift Foundation Pour at the Top Terminal
At the top of the mountain, our team poured the third and final lift foundation pour for the drive terminal area. With this final pour in place, the foundation now needs time to cure before installation work begins, setting the stage for the next phase of lift construction.
At the same time, we’ve been finishing retaining wall work at the top of the mountain. This structural work supports the build area and helps prepare the site for the lift equipment and additional construction that’s coming next.
2. Rebuilt Tower Components and Continued Line Prep for the Crystal Express
As part of our work to build the Crystal Express (our new high-speed gondola), our crews rebuilt key tower components, including sheave assemblies and cross arms. These parts play an important role in how the lift operates, as they support and guide the moving system that carries cabins up and down the mountain.
Alongside that rebuild work, we continued prepping the line for upcoming installs. This kind of prep work keeps the project moving smoothly as we fully shift into installation mode for the Crystal Express.
3. Wrapped Up Major Concrete Work at the Return Terminal and Started Building Inside the Structure
Down at the base of the mountain, we wrapped up pouring the base for the return terminal concrete work. This foundation progress is another key step toward building the structure that will support the Crystal Express as it departs from downtown Gatlinburg and carries guests to the summit.
With the base work complete, our team is beginning construction of the new terminal within the existing building. It’s a bit like building a ship in a bottle, and it’s a process that takes careful planning and precision as each element moves into place.
4. New Deliveries and Prepped for Helicopter Day #2
We had more deliveries arrive on Feb. 12, including the new lift shack at the top of the mountain. This lift shack serves as the lift’s control room and is another key component that helps the project transition from groundwork to full installation.
One of the key milestones in this update window is Helicopter Day #2 on Tuesday, Feb. 17. Unlike the first helicopter day, this one focuses on installing components, including new support towers, as we continue building out the lift system.
5. Continued Making Firefly Village Exterior Updates
Finally, Firefly Village is starting to look more like the storybook space it’s being designed to become. Crews have begun repainting exterior buildings this week and next. Trim installation is also starting on select buildings as the renovation continues.
