Things to Do in Gatlinburg this Summer in 2026

Summer in the Smoky Mountains starts with ridgelines turning a deep, hazy green and the Parkway filling with families and couples mapping out their days. During this time, Gatlinburg settles into one of its best seasons, with the city one of the most popular destinations in the Smokies over the summer months.

With so many indoor and outdoor things to do in Gatlinburg during the summer, you might know where to start. Instead of guessing, review our guide to the best things to do in Gatlinburg in summer 2026.

The 7 Best Things to Do in Gatlinburg This Summer

Whether you’re spending a day in Gatlinburg or a full week this summer, you can find lots of activities and venues in the mountain town to do. If you’re trying to create a travel itinerary for summer in Gatlinburg or just want something to do on a Saturday afternoon while you pass through, check out the seven best Gatlinburg summer activities below:

1. Hike the Trails of Great Smoky Mountains National Park

With more than 150 trails winding through one of the most biodiverse forests in North America, a hike through Great Smoky Mountains National Park is the heart of any Gatlinburg summer. Difficulty ranges from easy riverside walks to ridge climbs with sweeping views, so no matter your pace, there’s a path worth taking.

One standout is the hike to Grotto Falls, the only waterfall in the Smokies you can actually walk behind, sitting just a short drive from downtown off the Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail. If a strenuous hike isn’t in the cards, that same motor trail makes for a gorgeous slow drive through old-growth forest and past historic homesteads.

Either way, summer mornings in the park are cooler, quieter, and prime time for spotting black bears and deer before the crowds arrive.

2. Spend a Day (or Night) at Anakeesta

Rising above downtown Gatlinburg, Anakeesta is a mountaintop park where a single visit can move from treetop adventure and panoramic views to a full sit-down dinner and an enchanting night walk under the stars. When you visit this summer, you can ride the park’s new gondola system up from the heart of town, then spend the afternoon riding the Rail Runner through the canopy or climbing the AnaVista Tower for views that stretch across the Smokies.

New this season, the Firefly Experience on the reimagined Treetop Skywalk (coming soon!) will bring the magic of the Smokies’ synchronous fireflies to life year-round through immersive lighting, storytelling, and technology. When evening comes, Astra Lumina transforms the mountain into something else entirely, offering visitors a nighttime journey through light and sound.

For families with children, make sure to let your kids play in the park’s adventure zones, like BirdVenture, Treehouse Adventure, and the Treeventure challenge course. The park is also filled with plenty of opportunities for a quick meal, a sweet treat, and shopping. Whenever you want a sit-down meal, you can head to Clifftop or the Smokehouse for a mouth-watering meal and incredible views.

3. Go Ziplining

Few places in the eastern United States offer a better backdrop for ziplining than the Smoky Mountains. The tree canopy is dense, the elevation is dramatic, and the views open up in ways you don’t expect until you’re already in the air.

Summer is the sweet spot, as it offers warm temperatures, a fully leafed-out forest, and the experience of soaring above a ridge line with the Smokies stretching out below you.

Several operators in the Gatlinburg area offer guided zipline tours, like WildSide, which is nearby in Pigeon Forge and home to the longest zipline in North America. Make sure to experience the beautiful views of the Smokies and the chance to ride side by side with your family or friends!

4. Catch a Performance During Smoky Mountain Tunes & Tales

Running from mid-June through early August, Smoky Mountain Tunes & Tales is one of the best free things happening in Gatlinburg all summer.

Every evening, costumed performers spread out along the Parkway between traffic lights #5 and #8, playing dulcimer, banjo, and fiddle, spinning Appalachian tall tales, and embodying characters straight out of Smoky Mountain folklore.

While these musicians perform, you can just walk, wander, and let the evening unfold. More often than not, Tunes & Tales ends up being a trip highlight nobody planned for, and if your day starts at Anakeesta, a stroll through downtown after dark is a natural addition.

5. Celebrate the Fourth of July and America's 250th Anniversary

Gatlinburg’s Annual Fourth of July Midnight Parade has been running for decades, and the format alone makes it memorable. At 12:01 a.m. on the Fourth, 100 floats and entries move through downtown as fireworks explode against the mountain backdrop shortly after.

National Geographic Traveler named it one of the top ten parades to see in the US, and this year the celebration carries extra weight. July 4, 2026, marks the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, giving this already iconic Gatlinburg tradition a genuinely historic dimension. Anakeesta is leaning into the milestone too — their United Tastes of America event runs May 22nd through August 9th, turning the whole summer into America’s Biggest Birthday Bash. With any flexibility on travel dates, building a summer visit around this weekend is an easy call.

6. Explore the Great Smoky Arts & Crafts Community

When the Parkway starts to feel busy, the Great Smoky Arts & Crafts Community offers a welcome change of pace. Just a few miles east of downtown, its 8-mile self-guided loop brings together more than 100 independent potters, painters, woodworkers, jewelers, and glassblowers, many of whom work out of the same studios where they sell.

Summer is a particularly good time to visit, with artists active and often on-site, which means you’re as likely to watch something being made as you are to buy it. Slower and more local than anything on the Parkway, a visit to the Arts & Crafts Community tends to stick with people long after the trip ends.

7. Attend the Gatlinburg Craftsmen's Fair

Running July 10–19 at the Gatlinburg Convention Center, the Craftsmen’s Fair is the cultural anchor of the summer calendar.

Unlike the open-air community loop a few miles down the road, the Craftsmen’s Fair is an indoor, ticketed event with 180-plus juried artisans from across the country presenting their work side by side and running live demonstrations throughout the day.

Pottery, woven textiles, blown glass, custom jewelry, and carved wood fill the floor, with the makers behind each piece happy to talk about their process. For anyone drawn to authentic craft, few stops in the Smokies match it.
