Most visitors to the Great Smoky Mountains never get to see the synchronous fireflies that appear for two or three weeks each summer. During this short window, crowds often descend on the Smokies, but depending on when they arrive during the event, they might only see a few flashing fireflies. Anakeesta is changing that.
Starting this May, the park’s new Firefly Experience brings the wonder of one of the Smokies’ most extraordinary natural events to life year-round, with no seasonal window required.

The Natural Phenomenon Behind Our New Firefly Experience
The species responsible for the show is Photinus carolinus, a small bioluminescent rover firefly native to the eastern United States and one of only a few species in North America capable of synchronized flashing. Near Elkmont in the western part of the park, the largest population of synchronous fireflies in the Western Hemisphere gathers each year for a few weeks in late May or early June.
During this natural phenomenon, the flashing you’ll see is a mating ritual. Male fireflies take to the air and emit a signature pattern of five to eight rapid bursts of light, pause for several seconds of total darkness, and repeat. Females, which stay low to the ground, flash back in response when they recognize a male of their own species.
Scientists are still working to understand exactly how thousands of individuals manage to synchronize without any central cue, and researchers from institutions like Cornell and the University of Colorado have spent multiple seasons at Elkmont studying the question.
At the peak of the event, the entire forest alternates between light and darkness, with waves of cold bioluminescent light moving through the trees. Adult fireflies spend only a few weeks in this form after one to two years as larvae, which makes the window to witness the real phenomenon genuinely fleeting. Temperature and soil moisture shift the timing from year to year, and peak conditions last just days.
What Is Anakeesta’s Firefly Experience?
Integrated throughout the elevated pathways of the Treetop Skywalk, the Firefly Experience uses state-of-the-art lighting sequences designed to mirror the behavior of real synchronous fireflies. The lights flash and fade in patterns drawn directly from nature, helping to immerse guests in the experience. Walking through the canopy at twilight, guests feel surrounded by a living forest where light itself becomes a form of communication.
The design is intentionally rooted in science. Karen Bentz, founding partner of Anakeesta, has described grounding the experience in real-world biology as essential to honoring the phenomenon rather than simply mimicking its surface-level visual effect. Art, science, and storytelling work together high above the forest floor, producing something that feels genuinely true to the Smokies.
Since the experience is woven into the park’s infrastructure rather than housed as a standalone attraction, it’s available in every season. Guests won’t need to plan around a two-week window or hope conditions cooperate.
Where You'll Find It: The Reimagined Treetop Skywalk
The Firefly Experience doesn’t occupy a single stop on the map. It lives throughout the reimagined Treetop Skywalk, which is itself getting a significant overhaul as part of the spring 2026 opening.
This overhaul includes new towers and expanded bridges that push visitors deeper into the forest and higher off the ground. We’re also adding winding canopy pathways to open up vantage points that simply weren’t there before.
The Firefly Experience makes its debut within this reimagined skywalk in May 2026.
Part of Something Bigger: Other Making More Magic Updates
The Firefly Experience is one piece of Anakeesta’s Making More Magic campaign, a five-year, $100 million expansion that’s doubling the park’s footprint. A few other Phase 1 highlights worth knowing about include:
- Crystal Express gondola: The original gondola is being replaced by 56 glass-bottom cabins, each seating up to six guests. Faster and higher-capacity than its predecessor, the new lift, the Crystal Express, offers panoramic views of the Smokies on the four-minute ride to the summit. Scheduled to debut in spring 2026.
- Firefly Village reimagined: At the heart of the park, Firefly Village is being completely redesigned with a storybook-inspired look. Winding stone pathways and flowing water features create a more wandering, immersive feel, and a new scenic overlook gives guests fresh views of downtown Gatlinburg. Also opening in spring 2026.
- Phase 2 on the horizon: Making More Magic extends well beyond Phase 1. Starting in 2027, Anakeesta has plans for new rides, additional dining, and new attractions across the expanded park footprint.
