Weekend Getaway: Nashville to Gatlinburg & Smoky Mountains

April 5, 2023

Gatlinburg is about 220 miles from Nashville — roughly a 3.5 to 4 hour drive east on I-40. That’s close enough for a long weekend, far enough to feel like a real escape. If you’re planning a fall break, spring break, or any three-day stretch with kids in tow, this drive delivers mountains, hiking, pancakes, and a town that knows how to do family vacation well. Here’s everything you need to know before you go. Table of Contents How Far Is Gatlinburg from Nashville? The drive from Nashville to Gatlinburg is 220 to 221 miles depending on your exact start and end points. Via I-40 East, that’s about 3 hours and 37 minutes in normal traffic — though holiday weekends and summer Saturdays can add 30 to 60 minutes once you get close to Sevier County. One thing a lot of people miss: Gatlinburg is in the Eastern time zone. Nashville runs on Central time. So if you leave at 7 a.m. Nashville time, you’re arriving closer to noon by the clock on the wall. Factor that in when you’re planning your first full day. Quick Planning Notes Before You Leave Nashville for Gatlinburg You’ll lose an hour on arrival: Nashville is in Central Time and Gatlinburg is in Eastern Time, so your clock jumps forward when you cross time zones. Check road and weather conditions the day you leave: TDOT’s TNSmartWay and Tennessee 511 share real-time traffic incidents, construction, and weather-related road conditions, including live traffic cameras. Check Smokies conditions before you plan a “park day”: Great Smoky Mountains National Park posts current conditions and closures, and weather can change quickly at higher elevations. If you plan to park in the national park, budget for a parking tag: The park requires parking tags for vehicles parked longer than 15 minutes, and offers daily, weekly, and annual options. Best Route: Quick vs. Scenic Drive Quickest […]

March 30, 2023

Gatlinburg’s mountaintop adventure park is adding exciting new thrills – from mild to wild – for the whole family to enjoy this season GATLINBURG, Tenn. (Mar. 30, 2023) As part of its continued, multi-year $34 million expansion, Anakeesta, Gatlinburg’s premier adventure park, is unveiling two exciting new additions this year: The Hellbender Mountain Coaster and BirdVenture, an immersive and educational space for children, this year. Hellbender, a new heart pounding double-rail mountain coaster Hellbender, named after the salamander species native to the Smoky Mountains, will offer guests an adrenaline-pumping ride as they navigate a steep mountain incline, sway through tunnels, slither through twists and turns, and take in breathtaking 360-degree scenic views of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. With this new installation, Anakeesta will be home to two Gatlinburg mountain coasters, a single-rail and new double-rail mountain coaster for thrillseekers to enjoy. BirdVenture, an im-peck-able adventure through three life-sized birdhouses BirdVenture will provide the whole flock the chance to experience three larger-than-life birdhouses, a dozen adventure zones, and seven giant serpentine slides winding more than 50 feet down the mountain. This unique series of slide paths marks another first of its kind in the United States. Each birdhouse is home to three distinct birds – the owl, woodpecker and bluebird – native to the Smokies. “Our continued investment into Gatlinburg’s iconic mountaintop destination has reached another exciting milestone. These new additions will uplift the guest experience, provide exciting thrills for the young – and young at heart – and create incredible memories for families that bring them closer to nature,” said Bob Bentz, Founder and Managing Partner of Anakeesta. “Our team is proud to offer visitors an experience inspired by the majesty of the Great Smoky Mountains and pays homage to the state of Tennessee.” Guests are invited to follow along on Anakeesta’s social media platforms for exclusive behind-the-scenes content and insider peeks into […]
